Bergia[1], officially the Most Serene Republic of Bergia, is an island country in the Central Region of Terraferma. Located between the continents of Padova and Ngumo, it is bordered by the Great Bergian Sea by all sides. The Bergian archipelago consists of the five major islands alongside over three thousand major islands. Bergia is divided into 100 administrative prefectures and ten "major regions," and around 80% of its terain are plateaus or are heavily forested, causing most of its population to live in the coastal plains. With a population of almost 192 million sapient beings, it is the 5th most populous country in Terraferma. Cidade da Bergia is the country's capital and largest city.
The Bergian archipelago has been inhabited since the Late Mageiocene, with the beginning of the Bergian Mageiocene happening some fifty thousand years before the present date. The islands were not united until the 8th century of the First Ilberto Era[2] by a combined drago-elven-human aristocracy with a rotating emperor in Lama. Bergia was never isolated from the outside world, in fact, it was the most important naval outpost between Padova and the kingdoms of Ngumo. Imperial rule ended with the Revolution of the Good in 1652 which instituted a representative parliamentary democracy that lasts to this day. An industrial boom happened in 1701 which caused an increase in population and GDP in what was known as the “Miracle of the Helm.” Sadly, the boom became a bust after twenty years of non-stop growth in what became the “Décadas Perdidas.” The trigger for the bust can be put in the Bergo devaluation crisis of 1722 when president João de Almeida Xavia and his finance minister Zélia Bobam tried keeping the miracle alive in the face of global economic woes.
Currently, Bergia is a presidential parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislature known as the Congresso Deliberativo. It is widely considered a key player in global affairs and a chief negotiator between superpowers due to its commitment to international neutrality.
[1] It is also my place of birth and residence. I quite like it here.
